Reading: The Benefits of Trees (Difficulty 2%)
Transcript:
Trees are the lungs of our planet.
Absorbing carbon dioxide, and producing oxygen for us to breath, trees are essential to our survival.
However, there are many social, emotional and economic benefits to trees -as well as the environmental benefits- that may be less obvious.
Firstly, trees make us happy. Studies have shown that spending time around trees, and in green spaces helps to reduce anxiety and stress, leading to a healthier, happier you.
In education, children who spend more time in nature tend to learn faster in school.
Streets that have many trees are cooler, and have a calming effect on traffic, helping to reduce collisions; the trees also absorb some of the noise made by vehicles.
Trees help to improve the quality of the air we breathe -not only by producing oxygen- but by filtering harmful dust and pollutants such as carbon monoxide.
Tree can also absorb excess water in the environment, which helps to reduce the damage caused by flooding.
Many species of wildlife depend on trees for habitat. Trees provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and other animals.
Trees can also help to save money on your bills. This is done by reducing your cooling costs in the summer by shading the south and west sides of your home. If deciduous trees are used, they will allow the sun to pass through and warm your home in the winter.
And finally, a home surrounded by healthy trees can sell for up to 10% more than a home without, increasing the resale value of your home significantly.
